We tell stories to create meaning – to understand who we are and how the universe works. Sometimes we step into stories created by cultural stereotypes, systemic oppression, or family trauma, and it can be difficult to untangle the story of our authentic, thriving selves. Sometimes we just believe the story because it is told and re-told so frequently. But by taking a step back and looking at the big picture, focusing on some of the forgotten moments of strength, it is possible to reclaim the narrative.
“We tell stories in order to live”
- Joan Didion
What is the story you’re telling yourself? Does it align with who you are and how you want to be in the world? If not, what can you do to change story?
“The universe is made of stories, not of atoms”
- Muriel Rukeyser
