Book: The Myth of Normal

The first gathering of our tiny trauma book club met last night to discuss Gabor Mate’s Myth of Normal.

Some highlights:

  • trauma is built into our culture through focus on the individual, repressing stress and anger and lack of connection
  • attunement and attachment are key development needs that start at birth – the tension between attachment and authenticity leads to a fractured self
  • if left unchecked and unacknowledged, stress can settle no to the body in the form of chronic disease and autoimmune responses
  • mental and physical health reflect the context and environment you live in
  • being too nice at the expense of expressing your emotions can be toxic
  • women act as emotional labourers and cultural shock absorbers but also have increased culture pressure to be nice and repress emotions…hence are at higher risk for chronic illness

Have you read it? What are your thoughts?
