Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is one of the most research-backed approaches to healing and deepening romantic relationships. Rooted in attachment theory, it works on the understanding that most relationship conflict stems from unmet emotional needs and unexpressed feelings — not incompatibility.
In session, EFCT helps couples identify the negative cycles they get stuck in, understand what’s driving them beneath the surface, and begin responding to each other in new ways. The process moves through three stages: de-escalating conflict, reshaping how you interact, and building new patterns that last.
